5th Grade Science Agenda: January 10th – 14th, 2022

Reminder:  Students may correct missed questions on daily assignments and earn 3 points back to raise their grade.  It is the 5th graders’ responsibility to choose to do this work.   This can raise their final 9 weeks average significantly.

Some of these plans will be adjusted this week to reflect staff and student absences.

Monday

Weather observations

Compare Simple Mixtures and Special Mixtures – Solutions continues.   Comparison – lab research including food coloring,  water,   sugar.  Use room temperature water to dissolve a solute. Compare to heated water using hotplate.  Compare sand and water to sugar and water.  Salt + water + heat shows thermal energy used to separate water and salt by evaporation.  Compare sugar / saltwater.

This activity will be moved to a later date.  Students will do Physical Science Review activities today.

Materials:  Lab sheets – M Minds pgs. 29 – 32,  lab supplies & safety equipment

Tuesday

Shortened classes – Student assembly with Patrick Johnson.  Weather observations.

Wrap up / review Simple mixtures & special mixtures activities.  Students sketch these two in one box showing differences.  (Visual Vocabulary Journal).

This activity will be moved to a later date.  Students will do Physical Science Review activities today.

Resources:  Experiment data sheets,  lab supplies,  V.V.J.

Wednesday

Grade #2:  Unit 3:  Special Mixtures – Solutions.    Students show knowledge of Special Mixtures are solutions.  Finish any sketchings from Mixtures / Solutions labs.  Read section on Electric Current & Electromagnets.

This graded assignment will be moved to a later date.  Students will do Physical Science Review activities today.

Resources:  Red Harcourt Science books pgs F70 – F73,  10 item GC.

Thursday

Weather observations

This activity will be moved to another date.

Physical Science review:  Lab review stations:  Matter & its characteristics,  forms of energy and their characteristics,  forces,  reflection / refraction,  mixtures / solutions,  conductor / insulator.

Resources:  Lab activities / sheets / supplies from prior  Physical Science work.

Friday

Continue Physical Science review with lab stations from Thursday and class discussions.  Students repeat experiments,  compare new data to previous observations.  (Repeated experimentation increases reliability of results).

This activity will be moved to another date.

Resources: Lab activities / sheets / supplies from prior Science work.
