Welcome to 5th Grade Science 2021 – 2022

I’m Billy McBride,  your child’s 5th Grade Science Teacher.  Thanks for subscribing to the MacXtreme Science Blog.

This is my 20th year at White Oak ISD,  and I learn something new every day.  My wife Melissa teaches at Spring Hill,  and we are proud to call White Oak home.  I am a 13 – year Pine Tree Pirate,  and attended Kilgore College and U. T.  Tyler.  If it is on a bike,  hiking,  or anything outside,  I’ll probably do it.

Check regularly for information and updates about what we are researching and studying,  graded assignment titles,  and general information about Science in grade 5.

General Outline for this year:

August – late October – Life Science:  Ecosystems,  inherited traits,  learned behaviors,  living / nonliving,  life cycles,  producers,  consumers,  decomposers,  food chains,  food webs,  adaptive characteristics,  physical structures.

Late October – right before Thanksgiving break – Physical Science:  Characteristics of matter,  solid, liquid, gas,  changing states of matter,  conductor,  insulator,  weight,  mass,  forms of energy-sound, heat, electric, light, solar,  mechanical, work, forces – gravity, friction, magnetism, push / pull from wind, water, or human.

Right before Thanksgiving – Christmas break – THE AMERICAN CENTURY – Students will examine the inventions / technology / Science,  cultural / social,  and important events  from 1900 – 2000,  that occurred in or were heavily influenced by the United States,  making America the most important and powerful nation in the world.

January – March –  Finish Physical Science,  then –  Earth Science:  Solar System,  Earth/Moon/Sun System,  weather and climate,  water cycle,  changes to Earth’s surface due to erosion, deposition,  weathering,  human activity,  fossils ,  rocks,  evidence of Earth’s characteristics many years ago,  changes to Earth over time,  characteristics of soil.
